Here’s How to Apply Sunscreen for the Best Protection

It is important that you give complete protection to your skin against the harmful UV rays of the sun. However, while shopping for the sunscreen most of the people get confused as to which product to choose. Fortunately, good sunscreen creams are available at various price ranges in the market. However, a buyer needs to know the features that differentiate a good sunscreen cream from an ordinary one.

Before we go ahead and know about the features of a good sunscreen it is important that we understand what exactly is SPF; as this term, along with some numbers is found on the labels of all sunscreen products. The full form of SPF is sun protection factor which is basically the amount of time that you can safely spend under the Sun without getting sunburn. For instance, if you get sunburn after 10 minutes then SPF 15 in the sunscreen would enable you to stay out for 150 minutes before getting sunburn.  These statistics are measured in the laboratory, but when the sunscreen is applied on skin there are certain things that decrease the actual protection amount.

One of the most common mistaken beliefs among people is that a higher SPF can provide stronger protection; but the fact is that SPF measures protection against UVB rays only. In order to get the best protection, the sunscreen should also protect against UVA rays. As UVA rays are actually responsible for skin cancers and fine lines and other signs of skin aging.

To ensure that you are getting the best sunscreen cream, you need to make sure that you following the below mentioned things:

  • The sunscreen should contain at least SPF 15 or above.
  • Check if the cream contains ingredients like Mexoryl, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as these gives protection against UVA rays.
  • Use the cream in substantial quantity on your face and behind the ears to get adequate protection from the harmful Sun rays. You must also apply the cream on the other exposed parts of the body like the hands and neck.
  • After every three to four hours and after swimming and bathing you should reapply the sunscreen cream.

If you follow these tips, you will certainly be able to give your skin the best protection from the harmful rays of the Sun.
